MAJESTIC THEATRE The talking -pietuV© version of Somerset Maughau’s daring study of some aspects oT life'in the tropics. Ham, featuring Joan Craw lord and Waltei Huston,"opened this afternoon at the, Majestic, As Sadie Thompson, a girl whose life is unconventional, to say the least. Miss thaw ford lias a part calling i for sympathy arid talent, as well as extremely careful acting, and nei characterisation is a striking one. As the reformer, Walter Huston is required to meet great demands upon his ability, init fits admirably into the general scheme of things. The story of “Rain is well known, hut the theme is fascinating. The monotony of a steady downpour of rain, and its effect upon people in a certain environment, is cleverly suggested. The setting is a background for a parade of human emotions, the reformer’s condemnation of Sadie, Ins show of almost brutal power in an outpost of civilisation, and the climax where the reformer is shown to be very like other'men, ridden by human impulse, are all things lifted above the ordinary. REGENT THEATRE George Arliss, who has been described as “The first gentloman of the screen,” and again as the “world’s master actor, fully deserves all the line things that have been written about him. Who does not remember with pleasant recollections his masterly performances in “Disraeli,” “Old English," “The Millionaire, and others, ‘and now in “A Successful Calamity,’’ his latest picture, he is said to make the supreme picture of his remarkable career. The story of “A Successful Calamity V deals with an American family of great wealth ; a great financier, his young and lovely wile, and his two grown children; all of whom find themselves so busy with the pleasures and (luties imposed upon them by their money and position that no time is left for the enjoyment of real family life. In an attempt to remedy this unhappy situation the father announces suddenly that he is ruined. Amazing and far-reaching complications which he little expects, result immediately. The delightful comedy unfolds against most luxurious settings. The supporting pro ei’ainme includes “Herald News ’ (Australia), “A Mail Bride.” and “Sports Slants. “ The dancing ontlmsinsls will do well to remember the foster hall 'to be held in the Orange Hall on Friday.
