RELIEF FOR MAORIS
&GR&MES REVIEW, BY MINISTER (Per PriiM A<tl6cfi*tlori.) AUCKLAND, this day. An outline of cdflipfrehensite contract work, the plans for which had been launched successfully, for the relief of Maori unemployed, was given by Sir Apirana Ngata, in an interview. Employment of a reproductive nature was being provided for 1300 men. As examples of the .work being done, he said that at Ruatoki 120 yourig men were breaking in 1540 acres of hilly scrub country at 15s per acre. That work would be considered cheap at 35s per acre, Much 'work was being done in supplying fencing posts, In one- case near Lake Rotoiti it had been found necessary to construct seven miles of access road to reach totara bush which was expected to yield 100,000 posts. With the help of the unemployment subsidy, it was expected that posts would be available from a. dump on the main RotoruaWhakatane road at less than £4, a reduction of £3 on present prices. Provisional allocations for North Auckland involved the sum of £17,000, which was providing, or would provide work for 1332 Maoris on individual farms, as well as grorip development areas.
