Mr and Mrs Barns-Graham and family have returned to Huugaroa after visiting Gisborne for the reeent festivities.

Mr and Mrs R. G. Fitzgerald, Hangaroa, were the guests of Mrs H. Paeke when visiting Gisborne iast week.

• Mr J. Nelson, who visited Gisborne for .the races, has returned to Hawke’s Bay.

Mr and Mrs G. Reeves, who have been the guests of Mrs Barns-Graham, Russell street, have returned to Tolaga Bay. Miss Muriel Barker is spending a most enjoyable time at Mount Cook, where winter sports have been in progress.

Mrs C. Hutchinson is the guest of her daughter, Mrs Miller, Qtoko.

Mrs A. C. Steele, Tahunga, is the guest of Miss N. Steele, Russell street. Miss Marjorie Puflett, Gisborne, staying with Mrs. R. T. Cowper, Kilmore street, Christchurch. She will remain in Christchurch until after the Alexander-Cowper wedding, toward the end of this month.

Mr. and Mrs. Lumsden, Tokomaru Bay, who have been staying! with Mr. and Mrs. Eric Kenny, Bank of New South Wales, Eketahuna, _ have gone south’ and will be in Christchurch for the Grand National.

Mrs. Richard Barker and her daughter and niece, Misses P. and V. Barker, respectively, Gisborne, are visitors to Christchurch for Grand National week. Misses Janet ' Stevenson and _ Helen Buchanan, who have been their guests, have returned to Christchurch.

Two native-born pioneers of Howick, Auckland, Mr. and Mrs. L. H. White, celebrated their diamond wedding on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. C. 0. Morse, Mayor and Mayoress of Napier, celebrated their silver wedding on Sunday, when they were the recipients of numerous congratulatory messages from friends in all parts of New Zealand.

Miss V. deLautour, who was the guest of her aunt, Mrs. A. L. Singer, last week, has returned to Wairoa.

Mrs. R. E. Hill and her daughter, Miss Joan Hill, left this morning for Napier, where they will bp the guests of Mrs. Bromley Hill prior to the wedding of Miss Hill to Mr. P. Barlow, which takes place next Tuesday. Miss Margaret Hunt left for Napier this morning and will be the guest of Mrs. Barlow. Miss Hunt is to be a bridesmaid at the Hill-Barlow wedding. Mr. R. Frazer, who has been staying with his father in Gisborne, returned to Hamilton on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. P. Bellerby, Tokomaru Bay, wore visitors to Gisborne last week.

Miss H. Bell, Havelock North, is tho guest of Mrs. Barns-Graham at Hangaroa.

Mrs. H. Jackson and her daughters, Misses H. and B. Jackson, left yesterday on a motor tour and intend residing in Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Nolan, who were guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Nolan, “Otipi,” for the races, have returned to Ruakituri.

A wedding of great interest to Hawke’s Bay people was solemnised in the parish church at Wellingborough, Nottinghamshire, on June 25 last, when T>r. Harold Berry, of Napier, was married to Dr. Doris Louise Durie, late medical officer of health at Southend-on-Sea. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. D. Berry, cousin of the bridegroom! Dr. and Mrs. Berry will arrive in Napier early in September.

Engagement An engagement is announced between Ivan Noel Charles, of Invercargill, fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Charles, Gisborne, and Madge, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. Tucker, Aramoho, Wanganui. Golf Notes

The lady members played a bogey mate'll yesterday afternoon, the weather being perfect. Mrs A. L. Singer topped the A division, 1 down, Mrs A. A. Whitehead and Miss M. MeIldowic, 5 down, tying for second place. In the B division Mrs G. Chrisp and Miss M. Blair, 2 down, tied for first place, Mrs P. C. Dwyer, 3 down, being second. In the final of the A tournament Miss M. Bull defeated Mrs E. MeSweeney. The B tournament has been slightly delayed in the final stages, but will be completed at an early date. “Bring and Buy” Afternoon

The members of the Wainui Ladies’ Guild organised a most successful “bring and buy” afternoon, which was held at the home of Mrs. ,T. Pollock last .week in aid of the erection of a parish hall at Wainui Beach and the funds were augmented by £l2. The reception rooms were lavishly decorated with spring bulbs and violets, and a delicious afternoon tea was served by members of the guild. A meeting was held in the early part of the afternoon and a. large number of visitors from town were present. A musical programme was greatly enjoyed, items being given by Mesdames McGregor and Robinson, who sang a duet, and Miss Y. McCarthy, whose solos delighted everyone. Mrs. Garland was a very efficient accompanist. The Rev. F. I. Parsons proposed a vote of thanks to the hostess for the ufie of her home, also complimenting the guild members on the results of the afternoon.

Wharerata Women’s Institute. A hall prettily decorated with bowls of dimorphotheea, and a cheery fire, greeted members of the Wharerata Women’s Institute last Thursday afternoon. There was almost a full attendance, one apology for absence being received. Tho roll call, “My most exciting experience, f ’ met with a good response. A vote of condolence was passed with Mrs Westcott in her illness, and hopes were expressed for a speedy recovery. The Institute for the Blind forwafdod a request for any assistance the Wharerata body could give. A sympathetic reply was tendered. It was agreed to hold the October meeting a week earlier than usual, to avoid clashing with the half-yearly council meeting. A number of peggy squares wero handed in, for presentation to the Victoria League!. Mrs. Berthelsen was thanked for. tho gift of a bookcase to accommodate the institute library. The gift of a screen was also acknowledged from a friend of the institute.

For the best piece of home-made soap Mrs. McGuinness received first prize, and Mrs. Fleming second. A “bring and buy” table, in aid of the Bartlett’s School library fund, realised 16». , Mesdames G. McAra and W. Torrie dispensed a much appreciated afternoon tea. A very enjoyable meeting was concluded by tho singing of the National Ant'hem.

The cabaret at Lo Grand Cafe on Saturday evening was a most enjoyable finale to a very successful carnival season, and was well patronised 'by dancing enthusiasts. The charming furnishings of -the rooms were enhanced with shaded lights, and the distribution of colored paper hats, twirlies and quaint favors added to the gaiety, midnight coming ali too soon. Chrisp’s orchestra provided the music, and refreshments were served during .tho evotaing. Some very beautiful frocks were in evidence and were greatly admired. Among those present were Mosdames R. The Hunt Club Ball The frocking at the Hunt Ball on Friday night was particularly charming, and numerous fabrics in all shades were used in the contriving of the beautiful gowns, which, with few exceptions, featured close-fitting bodices and long full skirts. Capes and matching coatees were very much in evidence, as were long gloves and mittens. Shoulder sprays of real flowers were an added charm. Miss Dorothy Collin, a debutante, was a charming figure in a. frock of white silk elephant crepe designed with puff sleeves and a flared skirt, and caught at the back with a brilliant buckle. A handsome white fur cape and a. fur muff were pretty accessories, and she wrote silver shoes.

Miss Kathleen Walker, of Patutahi, a debutante, wore an attractive frock of ivory crinkle marocain, simply cut with a V neck outlined with swansdown, short puff sleeves, and a sectional flared skirt ’finished with a sash caught at the back with a diamante buckle. A black velvet cape, long white gloves and an early Victorian posy of white and cream flowers veiled .with delicate, fern completed her toilette. The Poverty Bay Hunt Club held its annual meeting at the Park racecourse on Saturday. Tho weather was extremely cold and stormy, but fortunately there was very little ram so a fair attendance of members resulted. A large number of members held picnic luncheons and tea-parties in the car paddock, and the outlying districts were well represented by those present. Everyone came well equipped for the adverse elements, and tweed ensembles were again the popular favorites, fur coats and wool frocks also being much in evidence.
