REMOVAL OF HOTELS

POWER OF LEGISLATION AGITATION FOR EXTENSION GISBORNE DISCUSSION REVIVED A revival of interest in the proposed extension of powers in the legislation regarding the removal of hotels was shown at yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce, which decided to make inquiries with a view to asking the Associated Chambers to take the matter up. Tho president, Mr. F. R. Rail, who brought the matter forward at the suggestion of Mr. L Miles, who was absent, said that new roads were being ouilt away from hotels, which were left in outlying places, and vet on new roads which had become more popular there were no hotels at all. If the matter were referred to the Associated Chambers they would secure an opinion from other parts of New Zealand. Mr. H. H. DeCosta pointed out that the proposal for permitting the removal of hotels in the public interest had been supported by both the Bay of Plenty and Gisborne licensing committees. Mr. F. Tolerton said the proposal also had the support of some inspectors of police, who believed that supervision would be easier if hotels were in more frequented spots. The Automobile Association was also in accord with the proposal.

The secretary, Mr. W. Hamilton Irvine, was instructed to ascertain the exact legal position, he and the president Icing empowered to act after this information was secured.
