WARNING TO BRITONS

IF THEY WANT TO JOIN CHINA’S ARMY GEN. SUTTON TELLS A FEW i HARD FACTS General Frank Sutton, . Daily Express special correspondent, telegraphed from Pekin on March 7:— All you fellows in England, Canada, and America who are telegraphing to me excitedly, wanting to serve as machine gunners with the Chinese forces, do not seem to know what you are up against. In the first place, high officials tell me they do not want you. In the second place, you would be the goat all the time. You would be put at "last hope” positions, never knowing whether to rest, hold on, or retreat. You would be blamed for every defeat. You would have no special food supplies—and Chinese'rations consist of millet porridge and plain water. Dysentery would kill you in a few weeks. The foreigner in the Chinese service either starts at the top and goes down, or starts at the bottom and stays there. Of the 5000 husky, bright-eyed Russians who .served six years ago in the Shantung, army there are only a few hundred survivors, and these are practically all crippled and mutilated. They are now disbanded. There is no medihal service except far in the rear. Wounded get out by walking, if they can; the severely wounded lie down to die, usually stripped of their clothing as well. My advice is that you seek a nice kind home with the French Foreign Legion.
