While the “golden cross” strains of the crack young pacer Pegaway stand out prominently among the winners at Te Arolia, the breeding of the dual winner, Te Mahanga, is interesting. His dam, Uniform, was a grey mare toy Commander. a son of Rothschild. In her younger days Uniform was a useful performer and she has proved a successful brood mare. Some of her progeny, particulary Signor, Signorella and Taipare. wero good winners, and the Inst-uamed would have reached 'cup company if his career had not been terminated by an injury to his shoulder. R. A. McMillan always held a very high opinion of the grey gelding, and considers he was one of tho best horses he ever handled. Signor was also a grey and McMillan is educating another of the same color and breeding as Taipare. Te Mahanga, who, like Taipare, is by Pur Thorpe, lias quickly made a name for himself by his remarkable consistency. In 10 consecutive starts he has only once finished out of a place, his record being three firsts, fivo seconds, and one third. Our Thorpe was very speedy and 18 years ago took a mile record of 2.6 1-5," and won the New Zealand Free-for-All in 2.41 2-5.
