THE POVERTY BAY HOUNDS

BUSHMERE MEET BEST OF FUN ENJOYED (By “Snaffles") One of tho great charms about hunting is that it is often the quite unexpected that happens ami though wo all went to tile Bushniei'c meet on Tuesday in beat and dust and full of misgivings regarding the possibility of there being any scent at all, hounds ran exceptionally hard all day and the best of fun was enjoyed. There was another very unexpected happening also. That good sportsman Mr. Jac-k Herbert was very worried over the fact that the bush and surrounding country llad Ireen shot over hard on Monday and did not know where we were going to find a hare, and said it would be quite all right to meet right in t-he shade of the trees as tho bares had been cleaned right out.

Well, wo did. Cars, hounds, horses and foot people were all there for some 20 minutes or more. At last hounds moved off to draw and away went a hare that had been lying not 50 yards from where hounds bad been waiting: The excitement was short-lived, however, for hounds simply raced away to roll her over after about three fields by tho side of a maize paddock. Some lucerne being drawn blank, a good hare went quickly away from tne next grass paddock and hounds ran fast down to and over Buslimere road and right-handed to Mr. Tietjen’s pumpkins and back to the road, which she crossed for some largo maize -paddocks, and hounds were stopped.

The next two hares found on Poupartie found sanctuary in Mr B'olitho’s maize, from which hounds again had to be stopped, but the bares-on the land of the popular sportsman, Mr Bill Pilmcr, wpre made of stouter stuff, ■and the first one found near his stopbank- ran a nice line, and hounds really raced her hard away from the view to the Ponparae flats, from which she returned to near where wo found her. .and swinging left-handed, hounds pressed on hard to kill her on the Pouparao rape.

Another hare found nearby, after complicating matters by disturbing a substitute after a fast gallop, was .able to beat hounds on the river silt. The next hare, found on 'Mr limit’s land, soon succumbed to the pace, and another got up nearby, hounds racing away to the maize, where they divided, the body of the pack running a hare to the road, where she was lost, whilst, the remainder of the pack ran on lefthanded to kill behind Air Angus Cameron’s house.

Hounds were running practically all day, and running hard, too, keeping t hings going merrily over a well-fenced country; but the ground was terribly hard, and I rather guess there were some pretty “shovey” horses pulled out on Wednesday morning, out of the field of 45 that enjoyed this good day.
