WOODEN MATCHES

TO BE MADE IN NEW ZEALAND Mr. W. McLay, manager of Messrs. Bryant and May," recently returned from a visit to England. While there he visited the modern factory yf the firm at Brornlcy-by-BoW, East London, at which the wooden matches at present imported to New Zealand arc made. The purpose of the visit was to complete arrangements for the installation in Wellington of the most modern machinery for making wooden matches. The boxmaking) plant has already been set up, and the match-making machine is expected to arrive in the near future, together with an experimental plant for the purpose of testing various timbers, etc. New Zealand white pine has not. been found suitable for making wooden matches, but the Forestry Department lias been investigating, and it is hoped to find a timber grown in the Dominion which will meet the requirements.
