QUESTION or DAMMINCr Nothing that might be regarded as confirmation of the optimism of many people in Central Otago with regard to the possible damming m the near future of Lakes Hawea. and Wfcnaka for mining and irrigation purposes could be elicited from Mr. C. J. McKouzie, engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, in the course of a. conversation with an Otago Times reporter. Asked if there were any possibility of the project being seriously considered in tho meantime, Mr. McKenzie said lie con'd give no information whatever on the subject, and, although he did not definitely state that the work would not be undertaken, at some future date, he reminded his interviewer .that tho department, was spending a lot of money at the present time, and was committed to a good, deal more.
