MARIST TOURNAMENT WELLINGTON WIN FINAL (Per Press Association.) WANGANUI, last night. The Spillane Cup Rugby tournament between North Island Alarist Rugby clubs here to-day culminated in a. narrow victory for Wellington over Gisborne Celtic in the final. Wellington accounted" for Wanganui in the semi-final by 15 to 3—five tries to a penalty, and in the afternoon met a vigorous Gisborne side in an even game. Gisborne, fielded a fit pack, which aimed at the frustration of Wellington’s speedy and resourceful backs. Milligan kicked a penalty goal and Gisborne led by three to nil at half-time. E. McGreevy kicked a penalty goal for Wellington early in the second half and the teams played out time with the scores three all. Extra time was played and, according to the tournament rule, the first score decided the matter. From a pretty back movement, McDonald, the Wellington centre, scored as he was tackled. Wellington thus winning the match and the cup by 6 to 3.
Auckland easily defeated Hamilton in the early match of the afternoon bv 17 to 3. ‘
The Wellington team were awarded the Moran Cup for the best defensive play.
