THE WOOL INDUSTRY

PRODUCTION KEEPS UP JAPAN’S LARGE PURCHASES (Received April 18, noon) LONDON, April 17. On behalf of the wool statistics advisory committee, a review of the world situation at the end of March has been issued by the Empire Marketing Board. It shows that despite five years of low prices, production is being maintained nearly at the level of the record years, 1928-29. Southern hemisphere countries generally have not reduced their output, although New Zealand and Uruguay reported smaller sheep figures, but American and Russian production lias fallen lately, particularly the latter, whose decline might he estimated at 50 per cent, of the peak production, nearly 400,000,0001b5. in 1928.

A feature of the import trade has been Japan's buying of 180,(XX),001bs. in 1932, compared with 72,000,0001b5. in 1926, thus absorbing almost the whole increase in Australia’s production.
