Yesterday was a good day for the batsmen, G, J. Robertson heading the list with a . chanceless century, while the two New Zealand representative members of the visiting teami Whitelaw and Vivian, . made 66 and 85 respectively in the second innings. .Poverty Bay having declared with nine wickets down for 228 in their second innings, and having a lead of 53 runs on the first, the visitors returned to the wicket, and Whitelaw and Vivian formed a great opening partnership which produced 112 in quick order. Both batsmen gave a display which was a deligjht to witness, and received an ovation when the century appeared on the board. u. At 112 Whitelaw fell a victim to E. Dow and Bcon, swinging a short , pitched delivery by the, former to square leg, where Boon took a good catch; his 66 included eight fours. Vivian began to pile up tb© runs when he was joined by McCoy, kitting two fine sixes off Robertson ,»nd Sharp -in successive overs. Fraser wan responsible for his dismissal, Vivian hitting his first ball high to square leg,for what have, been a six, but Ward, running into position, shaded the sun from his eyes with one hand, and brought off a magnificent one-handed catch high abdYft M£_head. McCoy and J. Scholium played out time for i 3 and two respectively, and ~;at stumps Parnell had scored 172 for the loss of two wickets. » . W ■ Messrs. Q. Price and G. V.
