WAIROA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.)

There is a singular shyness about the intentions in regard to tlie nominations for the coming borough elections, many, perhaps, endeavoring to ‘‘keep it dark until nomination day, when it will be no use trying to do so. For the Mayoralty there will probably be only the two aspirants, Mr. H. L. Marker, the present Mayor, and Mr. J. Corkill, a former holder of the position, the present members of the Borough Council are Messrs. D. Glengarry, M. J. Gemmed, J. 0. Scott, L. E. Galbraith, W. ri. Flint, and W. 11. Brady, the two vacancies, the seats held by Crs. 1. Browne and V. Fraser not having been Idled. Ol those mentioned, Crs. M. J. Gemmed, W. 11. Flint and J. 0. Scott are certain nominators, with Or. Galbraith, but Crs. Glengarry and Brady are undecided. The possibles are Messrs. M. Stall-maud, H. Christensen and V. E. Winter, with a barely probable nomination of Messrs. \V. J. Bill and R. deh. Hill. For the Power Board the retiring members include Messrs. J. R. Gillespie, C. V. Chamberlain and J. Corkill. They hate not given any inkling ol then intention, and as there is no burning question, it is likeiy they will renominate, and so far no new candidates are spoken of. The retiring Harbor Boaru members for the borough are Me.srs. J. Corkill and J. M. Osier, and both stand a chance of being returned unopposed. It is lor the Hospital Boaid that a plethora of candidates seems likely. Messrs. J. 0. Scott and \\. H. Flint have announced that they will he candidates, and in addition it is reported that a prominent minister will be a candidate, also Mr. A. Archibald, the latter on behalf of the Labor Party. M tbese nominations eventuate an exciting contest is anticipated. The main roll contains amout 1450 names, and is stated to be ue.l purged; the final date for becoming enrolled, is April 19. At tne quarterly meeting of the VYuiroa Fire Board there were present Messrs. W. 11. Flint, chairman, J. W. Norrie, W. Hay (Napier), H. L. Harker, and Ca, tain A. Knight. Mr. D. Byford, the superintendent of the brigade, was a1.,0 present. In addition to the reading of the annual report, the superintendent s report was also read. Ihe question of attending to the fire escapes at the ne.w nurses’ home at the Wairoa Hospital was left to the local members to deal with. The unsuitability of the „ve engine at present m use lor reaching an outbreak of tire quickly was brought up by Mr. Byford and strongly supported by Mr. Norrie.—lt was decided, after some discussion, to leave the matter to the Napier members, who are to report later on the subject. A voie of £2 10s to the fire brigade was made, and the annual grant was raised £2O. A letter was read from Amusements, Limited, Wairoa, stating that in the opinion of the lessees the attendance of firemen at the Gaiety Theatre was not necessary. The meeting upheld the view ol the superintendent, and recommended a conference of all the parties.
