ROWING

G.R.C. BUSCKE CUP P. GAVIN WINS SINGLES In the final race in the Gisborne^ Rowing Club’s series for the Buscke Cup, a single-sculling trophy, P. Gavin confirmed the sound impression he had made earlier in the progress of the series. He met K. Crarer at a disadvantage of 2scc., and the race proved as good as expected, the issue being in doubt practically to the finish. In the handicap list, Crarer received 10sec., and Gavin Bsec., and interest in their meeting was heightened by the fact that previously Gavin had beaten Crarer in a challenge race by a margin of two lengths. In the Buscke Cup final, Crarer’s advantage on the handicaps gave him a slight lead, which he maintained from Roebuck road bridge to Derby street. The leader rowed a siower stroke than Gavin, whose characteristic short stroke seemed better adapted to the conditions, the race being rowed against a strong in-flowing tide. Crarer took a bee-line for Derby street bridge after negotiating the wide span’ of tht> Ballauco street structure, and this carried him over some shallow water whero the current did not exert its full force, while Gavin came through a narrow span at Ballanee street and then followed the deep-water channel, getting uncomfortably. close to one or two of the jetties on the Wliataupoko side, but experiencing no real trouble. At Derby street, the boats converged in their courses, and Crarer was seen to have just under half a length’s advantageHe was a little tardy in correcting his bearings, however, and narrowly escaped a collision with the bridge piles, the loss of way costing him a good length. Recovering well, lie finished strongly, hut Gavin was the fresher of the two, and went ahead to win by a little over a length. The winner is in his first season with the Gisborne club, but formerly rowed in Wellington. A well-conditioned lightweight, he has had some success in fouroar and double-sculling competition this season, and by means of a challenge race, won the right to represent his club in the lightweight, division of the Npill Shield competition at Wairoa today.
