WAIROA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.) It is reported that the repairing work l on the Mangapoike road and tho byroad, rendered necessary by the Septemoer earthquake, is now nearly comp eted. except that ttie Superstructure of one of the oid bridges must be renewed, the stringers for which are now awaited. The further length of eight miles of the Maungataniwha road is about completed. Most of the formation is in ruin ice country, and the cuttings near tho Pukematai and Mangahopai streams are heavy and will probably prove costly in regard to maintenance. At the Borough Council meeting the Mayor, Mr. H. L. Harker, announced having learned from Mr. Trevor Smith, resident engineer, that the new bridgo would bo ready for opening by tho end of May. Recognising that there was no time to be lost lie had sent a cordial ini’.tation to the Governor-General to perform the official opening. A reply had been received stating that as much as he would like to meet tho Wairoa people, the whole of his time in May was taken up. —The Mayor said it was possible that they could arrange to hold over the opening till June or July, but that must be left to the new council. He had been hoping to make the. occasion a gala day, not many of which fall to Wairaa’s lot, and the local bodies should combine to bring this about; tho County Council being the largest contributor to the cost of the bridge, should make a start. A small committee comic sing the Mayor and Crs. Glengarry and Scott was set up to go into tho matter, and the Mayor’s action in sending the invitation was confirmed.
