DISAPPOINTING RESULTS
OTTAWA CONFERENCE , MORE TARIFFS ADVOCATED , (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The Ottawa Conference was a disappointment, said Mr. V. W. Doidge, honorary secretary of Lord Beaverbrook’s Empire crusade, on his return to-day to New Zealand for a holiday. He said Air. Baldwin was still fearful of the effect of a policy of taxing food, and he temporised at Ottawa. The Dominion delegates were sent Home with little beyond platitudes and promises' If New Zealand had the impression that lis much as possible had been gained, tlie impression was false. A more reliable lead from the British Government would have accomplished more. Lord Beaverbrook was now leading a new Campaign for a complete realisation of his policy, and success was in sight. 1 There was only one way to Save the British and Dominion farmers, and that was to erect a tariff Wall against foreign foodstuffs. The Empire would then feed herself and New Zealand and other Dominions would find an assured and' shelter-: ed. market in Britain:
Mr. Doidge described high exchange as only a palliative) but said the temporary benefits to the farmer .would be ivrt'rth' while. •' - ' * “ ! * 1 ■
