RELIEF WORK PAYMENTS
EFFECT ON COUNCILLORS
AMENDMENT TO THE LAW

Borough councillors who have lost their position through being obliged to take relief work were discussed by the House to-day. wltcu a clause was being passed ia the Finance Bill permitting county council members to receive payment front the Unemployment Board for supervisory work. Air. F. 'Etuigstone (Labor. Waimnrino) asked the Government to accept no amendment removing the disqualification from members of local bodies who take relief payments made by the bodv of which they are a member. AD. A. Harris (Coal., AVaitemaia) cited a case in bis district where the Takapuna Borough Council was obliged to go to the expense of a by-elec-tion owing to a member receiving relief work from the borough, yet the same man could, without disquulilica(Din. receive payment through the Education Board for works supervised by the Takapuna borough, engineer. Air. D. G. Sullivan (Labor, Avon) mentioned another case .involving throe- councillors in his district. I hoy were able to get work under the city council without disqualification. The Hon. A. Hamilton, ne.ting-.Aliu-ister of Employment, replied that it the payment were made, direct from the Unemployment Board it did not appear lo affect a councillor's status, but as there might be difficulties over Die acceptance, of the amendment, he undertook to investigate the which could, .if necessary, be dealt with when the session resumed.
Air. Langstone accepted this promise ml withdrew his amendment.
