SPECTACULAR SMASH
SPEEDWAY SENSATION three riders come down NONE SERIOUSLY INJURED (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. The sudden collapse of the front tyre of a racing motor-cycle resulted in three prominent cinder track riders becoming iuvolvicd in » -spectacular smash at Western Springs Speedway this evening. One of the three, C. Goldberg, 23, received concussion and was taken to the Auckland Hospital, while of the other two A. Mattson, Dominion champion, was rendered unconscious but recovered, while T. Stevenson, one of the English team, escaped unhurt. Goldberg, who resided at Eden Park terrace, is not seriously injured. He is the third rider from tho local speedway to be admitted with head injuries since the track opened on November 26. The crash occurred ill the filial of the Speedway Handicap event. E.- Gregory, of England, was leading, closely followed bv Mattson, Avho in turn Avas pursued by SteAxenson, Goldberg bringing up the rear. The pace increased as the race progressed, and in the last lain each of the riders was on full throttle in the final bend, when Mattson’s front tyre suddenly collapsed. In an instant the deflated inner tube was entangled in tho front wheel, and the outer cover Avas jammed in the front forks. The machine. suddenly checked, leaped bodilv into the air and threw the rider sprawling across the track. Stevenson was only a few yards behind and Goldberg Avas still further back. Both made plucky attempts to avoid tho fallen rider.' but their speed carried them on top of Mattson. For a moment the three riders lay beside their mounts, but Stevenson Avas quickly on liis feet, and although shaken, was unhurt. Both Goldberg and Mattson were rendered unconscious. Mattson was too shaken to ride again.
