Unanimous support was accorded by the Franklin Power Board to the proposal by the Otago Power Board that legislation he enacted for the compulsory conversion of local body loans to a lower rate of interest. Mr. G. 1- Parvin mentioned that, through the favotable exchange rate, the I ukekohe Borough Council could have saved between £7OO and £OOO recently by paving off a loan raised in Australia with a new loan to be raised in New Zealand. However, the Government had refused permission. When it prevented local bodies reducing liabilities in this way, it should assist them by making provision for the reduction of interest rates which they had to pay.
A lady motorist had a very narrow escape when travelling from Wellington o Opotiki last week. When a short distance from Taupo, sho was suddenly on fronted by a wild horse, which dash'd o;t in tii© middle of the roadway, ■ighfc in front of the car. The animal ■eared up and waltzed about the road on •ts hind legs and let out a wild scream ,f unger. The driver of the car had lit 110 time to do anything, and blind!v pressed her foot on the brakes, causing tli«> car to skid off the road into the thi ■’< scrub at tho roadside. The fact that, the icar skidded probably prevented a serious accident, as otherwise the rearing horse must have fallen down on the be met of the car.
