’QUAKE PRECAUTIONS
GISBORNE MAIN SCHOOL ARCHITECTS’ INSPECTION Although an official report as to the condition of the Gisborne Central School since the earthquake of September 10, and estimates of the cost of effecting repairs and taking the necessary precautions against niture earthquake damage are not yet avuJable, it is understood that the damage is not extensive.
Yesterday an official inspection of the Central" School and the brick building accommodating the infants nt the Mangapapa School was made by the Director of Education, Mr. T. B. Strong’, the department’s architect, Mr Savage, the chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, Mr. G. A. Maddison, and the board’s architect, Mr. C. B. Boland. The architects made a thorough examination of the buildings, but Mr. Savage, who will report later to the department upon his findings, was not prepared to make a statement at this juncture when interviewed last evening.
Mr. Strong stated, however, that ho believed that it would be found that the damage was not extensive. The architects would report in due course, after conferring as to the requirements to make the buildings absolutely safe.
The director added that the depn tment had no money to take off the top storey of the Central School and provide accommodation for the classes which formerly occupied that part uf the building if such a course were not absolutely necessary. If, however, it proved necessary to remove the top storey for the safety" of the children the work would have to be done. I'lie department, he said, was anxious to restore the confidence of the pupils and their parents in the building, and everything would be done to make the Central School and the Mangapapa School absolutely safe.
