ROWING
G.R.C. PRESIDENT'S FOURS FIRST RACE DECIDED The major club event of the season was initiated this morning by the Gisborne Rowing Club, when the first race in the President’s Fours series, for Mr 0. W. Muir’s trophies, was rowed on the Waimata River. There are five races in the first round of the series, and in order to keep up to timetable the committee has found it necessary to conduct some of the events in the early mornings. To-day’s race was between C. Armstrong (str.), Malcolm son, Robertson and Pickering (bow), and H. Hankcy (str.), Martin, Corn and Hall (bow). From the start it was apparent that Armstrong had the weightier and more finished crew, and a fast sprint over the first quarter of a mile established his superiority. From that point on, Hankey’s pursuit was spirited but vain, and he was comfortably beaten in good time. The series will be continued this evening, when H. Hunter and A. Lentill will meet in one race, and K. Beil and D. Alexander in another. Tidal conditions probably will preclude the rowing of more than two races this evening, but if possible a third event will .bo rowed off.
