Humane Slaughtering
MORE humane methods for the slaughtering of animals in New Zealand are advocated by two English organisations, the Council of Justice to Animals and the Humane -Slaughter Association.
At a meeting called by Dr. Mary Blair, who was in New Zealand some months ago. a motion was passed, “That in view of the fact that humane slaughter is compulsory in Scotland and considered advisable m England, the meeting expresses the opinion that New Zealand, which does not employ the methods of humane slaughter, should immediately do so." Two types of killers are recommended, a pistol which fires a bullet, and another, known as the captive bolt, which fires a bolt ■'which penetrates the skull and returns immediately to the firearm. In both those operations, there is no danger of pain to tho animals, it is claimed. The former type costs from 19s fid upwards, and the latter from £5 upwards. A cost of about id per animal is added to killing charges.
