SLAUGHTERING METHODS

SUCCESS OF NEW SYSTEM WIDESPREAD ADOPTION The new system of slaughtering slmpp and lambs, which involves an extended use of the principle of division of labor, is being widely used throughout the North Island, in addition to tho West* Held freezing works, where the system is in successful operation, many other freezing works have adopted the idea, including Southdown, Moerewa, liorotiu, Tomoana, Whakatu, Longburn, Xgahauranga, Imlay (Wanganui) and Feildiug. Instead of each slaughterman carrying out- the complete operations of killing,' skinning and dressing the animals, the new system involves separate duties being performed 'by different men. As each animal is killed, the carcase, suspended on a chain, is carried by a travelling conveyer to the dressing shed upstairs. There the carcases are switched on to a series of overhead rails fitted with conveyor chains. These carry the carcases at a, set pace along the shed in front of the gang of slaughtermen. As the carcases move on slowly each man does his own particular operation. The new system was introduced after the freezing workers’ strike commenced and one of the advantages claimed for it is the rapidity with which new men can be taught their particular operations. They quickly become used to their tasks and fast killin ; and dressing times are being recorded wherever the system is in operation.
