Last Monday evening an interesting badminton match was played between teams representing the Territorial Defence Badminton Club and the Gisborne Y.M.G.A. ihe match was played on the latter’s -ourt in the Y.M.G.A. gymnasium, where a number of spectators, including officers and men of the territorial companies, witnessed some very fast and clever badminton. The Y.M.G.A. team emerged the winners,

with seven games to five, and 231 points to 200.

When one eoalised that the boys of the Defence Club were nearly all new to the game, quo was astonished at the progress they have made, in learning the 'iner points. Now that a New Zealand Badminton Association has been formed and a cup •« open for competition in Poverty Bav, there seems to bo a feasibility of badminton 'becoming very popular. and by next winter the, Defence club should be able to put out a fairly strong team.

At an interval during play all players and spectators wore treated to a very acceptable upper, served by the ladies of the Y.M.G. A. club’s team. Mr. Les. M. Anderson, speaking on behalf of the Y M.C.A. team, expressed the wish that further matches of a similar nature would he played during the next season, and added 'hat a cordial welcome would bo extended whenever they chose to visit the Y.M.C.A

Thomson; Alexander and Watt aeat Margoliouth and McLaughlin ; Williamson and Robinson lost ti Ball and Lockett; Anderson and Gresham beat Patterson and Vincent; Brown and Fleming beat Hayes and Hoili'er; Stick bury and Fleming lost to Hopkinson and Crafts; Gresham and Alexander iieat Bongard and Thomson; Anderson and Robinson lost to Ilopkinson and .McLaughlin; Alexander and \Yatt beat Ball arid Lockett; Fleming and Watt lost to Patterson and Vincent ; Stichbury and Robinson beat Hayes arid ileitfer.

A gathering of. N.C.O.’s was held prior to .the badminton match to farewell . Corporal L. . ,T. Patterson, who leaves this week to take up a position in Whakatane. . A presentation wa3 made from Ins fellow-N.C.OCs, and Corporal Patterson intimated his desire to continue as a member of the volunteers if able to do so in his new district.
