TROLLEY BUSES

A TRIAL IN SYDNEY APPROVAL BY GOVERNMENT Trackless trolley buses are to be given a trial in Sydney, and it is expected that they will be operating within three months. It was announced on November 10 by the acting-Commissioner for Road Transport, Air. S. A. Maddocks, that the Minister of Transport, Mr. Bruxner, had approved the acceptance of an offer by A.E.C. (Australia) Proprietary, Limited, for the supply of two trolly bus units for a trial period not exceeding 12 months without any obligation to purchase being taken by tho Government.

Air. Maddocks said that the route upon which these buses would ply for trial purposes had not yet been determined, and that in the event of the trial proving satisfactory and it being decided to purchase equipment of the kind, tenders would be called in the usual way. Trolley buses had been introduced bv the A.E.C. company under the management of the group of transport companies associated with the London General Omnibus Company, and were in general use in various cities in Great Britain, in the United States, and in Christchurch, New Zealand. In Chicago more than 100 of these trackless trolley buses had recently been introduced, and were operating in a very satisfactory manner.

The trackless trolley bus bears some resemblance to a motor omnibus, but is operated by a simple electrical drive, which is said to bo more economical and, when used in proper areas, less costly in maintenance than the internal combustion engine.
