DISCOVERY OF GOLD
TAKAPUNA SENSATION LICENSES APPLIED FOR (Pnr Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last, nip'llt. A sensation was caused in Takapuna to-day when it was reported that Sold had been discovered in the borough. Questioned about the matter, Mr. McVcagh, of Messrs. McVcagh and Fleming, barristers and solicitors, of Auckland, confirmed the report. Mr. McVcagh added that three men had discovered gold on a property at the rear of the Grammar School at Clifton a few days ago quite accidentally. while carrying out experiments with ironsand. ■ Gold, he added, had been found in more places than one, and had been submitted to an expert, one of the best authorities in Auckland, who had certified to the genuineness of the metal.
Mr. McVcagh said that two of the claimants were Messrs. P. Mellveney, of Devonport, and Mr. N. J. Jones, of Auckland. They had to-day made application for a prospecting license to the Commissioner of Crown Lands for the North Auckland district, an area of .100 acres being mentioned.
