MORTGAGORS’ RELIEF AMENDING BILL PASSED (pur Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Ipst night. An amendment to the Mortgagors and Tenants Further Belief Bill was introduced in the House of Representatives to-day by Governor-Gen-eral is Message, The Hon. .T. G. Cobbe said the object of the amendment was. to extend the protection of the main Act to leases executed before the passing of that Act, namely, leases executed between April 17, 35)31, and March 31 of the •present year. The matter was one of urgency because several eases of hardship had arisen. Mr. A. Harris (Coal.. Waitemata) asked whether the amendment applied also to guarantors of leases. Mr. Cobbe said guarantors were already protected under the bill. The amendment was adopted. On the motion of Sir .Tames Parr in the Legislative Council, urgency was accorded the passage of the bill. In committee, Sir James Pair said the measnro was designed to dear iip anomalies. It had been found that in some instances had contracted themselves out of the provisions of the original legislation, and it* was desired to give them the protection they were entitled to. The Hon. R. Moore considered that they wore going too far in interfering with what hud been known as the sacred rights of contract. fhe bill was passed through all stages without amendment.
