SOME MODERN COSTUMES OPINIONS IN AUSTRALIA SYDNEY, Nov. 24. Sydney has now become quite accustomed to the backless swimming costumes which are worn by its women bathers. At the beginning of the season there were signs of' protest, but those who complained aroused little enthusiasm. It has; beeii a different matter in th’A casi o’f' costumes that are abbreviated elsewhere but in the back, and several of’ the beach authorities have macm it known that they will not tolerate costumes that are low cut in the front. There is no such thing as a neck to knee costume in Sydney, _ and it is surprising that the censorship is not carried a little further than it is. Syd ney girls, for the most part, are content with a backless costume.
In Melbourne the swimming season b later in- starting than in Sydney, and sc it is that Melbourne is onlv just beginning to engage in its annual, controversy surrounding beach attire. The Mayor of St. Kilda is certain Ilia l no council will favor the use of the latest types and in this lie is supported by the secretary of the West St. Kilda Lifesaving Club.
