DAIRYING ON CONTINENT

CONCENTRATION ON "QUALITY NEW ZEALANDER'S OBSERVATIONS Interesting observations on the dairyiuig industry on the Continent are made Ay Mr. Ik'J. Blander, of New Plymouth, nil a fetter to the 1 Taranaki Herald. Mr. dander, who is on an extended tour of [the'Old Country and. tho Continent, says that it is very pleasing to see tho way the Danes have received the new British tariff proposals. “At the moment,” bo says, ‘they are absorbing the duty on their butter themielveSj but confidently believe that their superior quality ! will eventually win out and that the British consumer, by paying a higher price for Danish butter, will be paying the duty. '' J “Both Denmark and Sweden, Mr. dander continues, “are putting up big campaigns urging that British goods be i bought, realising that England is tho only market fibw left for their produce.” Mr. dander says he has now been • through Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany and Belgium, and that it is surprising to see how theso countries are* concentrating on the production of jutter arid Cheese. He has 'been shown over' a 11111111101’ of Government experimental stations in Sweden, Denmark and Germany, and says that all these Countries are convinced that quality, owing to the likelihood of over-produc-tion, is the tniug that will count, and are leaving no stone unturned to produce first-class butter.

Finland is, in Mr. TTlander’s. opinion, the best, organised dairy producing country. that is so far as marketing, buying and co-operation are concerned. They annually send 12 of their best managers abroad to other countries lor instruction. While in Denmark Mr. dander met a party eff 50 Russian managers 01a a tour of inspection of Danish, manufacturing and farming methods. It would pay New Zealand handsomely to send some of its managers away annually just to see what tho' other fellow is doing, says Mr, dander.

In Belgium, Mr. dander says, he found large quantities of butter being iippqrted from' the Balkan States.
