THE PICTON MURDER
FINE DETECTIVE WORK JUDGE COMMENDS POLICE (Pur Press Association.) BLENHEIM, this day. At the conclusion of the trial of Edward Tarrant for Hie Picton murder, JMr. Justice Biair invited Sub-InspeCtor Ward, Detective-Sergeant Jnrrold, Sergeant Petersen, and Detectives Sinclair and Hall to his chambers for the purpose of personally expressing to them his appreciation of the remarkable detective work accomplished. Ilis Honor mentioned that Sir Frederick Chapman, retired judge, and possibly one of New Zealand’s greatest criminal judges, had expressed the opinion that the detective work displayed in the Tarrant case made it one of the most outstanding in the story of crime it) the Dominion. His Honor stated that he intended to write to the Commissioner of Police recording appreciation of the officers’ services.
