ATTEMPT IN FEBRUARY

LAND SPEED RECORD SIR M. CAMPBELL’S PLANS (British Oflicinl Wireless.) Bee. 10 a.m. RUGBY, Nov. 28. Sic Malcolm Campbell expects to attempt iu break his own world's land speed record of 253.9 miles an hour in February. His oid racing car, the Bluebird, lias been rebuilt, strengthened, and fitted with a 2500 horse-power Rolls-Royce engine of the type used in the supermai’ine seaplane in ’which Flight-Lieu-tenant G. 11. Stainforth sol up the world air record of 407.5 miles an hour. Tlii; ear will be shipped to Daytona in January. Interest in the world’s laud 'speed record, held by Sir Malcolm Campbell's Napier-engined ear Blue Bird, at 258.9 miles an hour, continues unabated both in England and America. The holder is known to have purchased a special Rolls Boyce aero-type engine, whicli is being’ installed iu the Blue Bird, while an enormous Miller car is nearly complete to attempt to regain the record for tho United States. Tliis Miller car will bo an extraordinary powerful vehicle, having a Iff cylinder 54,000e.c. engine installed in a special chassis. Probably it will lie driven, by an Englishman. The Miller engines are well known all over the world for their great efficiency, and the new l(i-eylinder monsters are said to be those used by Gar Wood experimentally in one of the bliss America’s prior to the race in America with Kaye Don for the Harmsworth International Trophy. Sir Malcolm Campbell lias secured a Rolls Koycc engine similar to that installed in Flight-Lieutenant Stainforth’s Schneider Cup aeroplane, which atained a speed of 415.2 miles an hour. It has .12 cylinders, and is said to develop 2650 brake h.p., giving’ off .1 h.p. for each .711 b weight. It is probable that the Silver Bullet, the special twin-engined Sunbeam car which Kaye Don took to Daytona on an abortive attempt to break the land speed record, has been reconditioned, and fitted with new engines for another ittenipt. The hist one failed because the beach was so rough that no sanction was granted for Kayo Don to malic his attempt, although lie remained at Daytona for many weeks waiting for a chance. John Cobb, a prominent and successful Brooklands racing driver, will probably have charge of it.
