Tin* Tiroa was to have, left Gisborne on Monday evening for Auckland with a load of sleepers, hut a dispute arose bet ween the union and the owners of the vessel as to the manning of the forelmld and the trucks from which the sleepers were being loaded into that portion of the ship. The company gave way in regard to the number of men to he employed below, increasing' tin* number from four to six. •Hint declined to make a similar increase in Ihi* number.of men on the railway trucks. Union labor was thereupon withdrawn from the forehold, though work proceeded in the a.fteiimld with four men in the ship and four on the trucks. yesterday saw no progress in the dispute, and a meeting of the local disputes committee, held yesterday afternoon, was inconclusive. This morning, however, when the call was made for labor for the Tiroa, unionists accepted engagement, and loading proceeded with six iiien below and four on the trucks. No question was raised by the union in. respect to the loading of meat for ithe liner Mataroa, when labor was called for yesterday afternoon in anticipation of the ship’s arrival in the bay this morning. Since the loading of tiie I’ort Dunedin last week, when lade of union labor led to the employment; of farmer labor, conditions on tn * waterfront have returned to normal, ami no difficulty had been anticipate ! in connect ion with the Mataroa’s loading. Tlu* vessel was scheduled to load 5.841. boxes of butter, 201 crates of choose, 175 bales of wool, 817 carcases of mutton, 10.0(59 carcases of lamb, 70 carcases of pork, and 185 packages of meat sundries from Gisborne.
