Mr. A. Engftbretscn, formerly a member of the staff of the Napier Main School, lias been appointed headninstei of the Hastings Street School, Napier. The Rev, C. A. Clements, formerly rector of Grnffen Hall. Warrington. Cheshire, arrived at Wellington by the Rangitane from London. Mr. Clements, who is accompanied by bis wife and daughter, is cm a health trip to New Zealand.

Dr. Richard Grace, son of Air. L. Grace, of Wellington, and brother of the late Mr. William Grace, of the Native Department, arrived from England last week. Dr. Grace, who has been attached to the Royal Air Force at Home for some time, was accompanied bv his wife.

The former Poverty Bay representative cricketer and Rugby footballer, Mr. F. Bennett, lias returned to Gisborne after a residence of two years on the East Coast, and will resume bis connection with cvic’-et under Ihe Poverty Bay association. His services already have been secured by one of the senior clubs.

Guests at the Masonic Hotel this week include Air and Mrs (1. Baildon (Auckland), Air and Mrs C. N. Taylor (Wellington), Miss Carter (Wellington), Miss Alartin (Napier), and •Messrs. 11. W. Jones, D. N. McGregor, K. 'Thompson. T. Carr, and H. L. Gibbs (Auckland), H. C. Wilton, K. Wilton, L. ,T. Wallis, R. E. Galvin, and G. 8. Hart (Wellington), G. E. Stevens and H. Pierard (Palmerston North), and jy. P. Mannix (Christchurch).

Captain W. P. Townshend, commander of the P. and O. liner Strathaird, was the recipient on October 6 of a gold medal and certificate tendered by the Greek Government for services rendered in connection with the wreck of the steamer Theodosos BuJgaris in the Bay of Biscay in 1930. Captain Townshend, who at the time was in charge of the Viceroy of India, directed rescue operations, and was instrumental in saving the lives of 28 men land two stowaways. Air. O. S. Cooke. R.M.R,, who was .third officer of the Viceroy of India.' and went away in charge of the lifeboat, also received a medal.

■ Last evening Die staff and a number of former teachers in the St. Andrew’s Sunday school gathered to honor two ladies who have given long years of service to the work. The guests were Misses F. M. Witty and B. (.’ox, both being recipients of the long-service certificate issued bv the Youth Movement of the Presbyterian Church. On behalf of the committee, the Rev. James Aitken carried out. the presentation, Miss Witty’s certificate being for 35 years’ unbroken service, and Miss Cox’s for 30 years soivice. also unbroken. Mr. Aitken mentioned that though Miss Cox recently found it peoessarv to suspend her attention to the work of Die school, Miss Wittv was able to continue in Die duties to which both had shown such devotion. The opportunity was taken to signalise Miss Cox’s personal popularity, and the regret felt in respect of her retirement, by^ the presentation of a handsome handbag. Competitions and musical items contributed to the. enjoyment ol the evening. ___________
