MEMORANDA
The names of the judges for the Gas Company’s Christmas, cake competition are advertised in this issue, Mesdames Gunn and H. McLernou having consented to act in that capacity. The competition, entries for which close on December 14, promises to be keenly contested, over fifty entries having been received since Monday. There is no entrance fee for tho event, the only stipulation being flint file cakes must be cooked in a gas oven. 1 ,
The ladies, of the St. Luke’s Guild, Waerenga-a-hika, have been very busy sewing and making! useful articles to meet the slender purses of those times Tho fete, as usual, will be held in' attractive surroundings, all the stalls being arranged under shady frees. Afternoon tea will be served under the spacious walnut tree. The shilling brown paper parcel stall, which is a new attraction this year, will be a pleasant surprise to all. Competitions of various descriptions will add to (lie enjoyment' of the afternoon. As last year, there will be no charge for admission, A lecture of great merit will be delivered at the Baptist Tabernacle tomorrow night by Dr. J. J. North, president of the Baptist Union, and principal of tho Baptist College, entitled “Cromwell and Freedom.” Dr. North is an outstanding platform speaker and this lecture lias drawn large audiences in the main centres. It is a thrilling story, well told, how in times of great
national peril and confusion, it is natural that nations, liko individuals, should rally round the one man who shows himself equal to the occasion, who hopes when others despond, who works and labors to relieve disaster while others are lamenting it; and then, for the first, time since the death of Queen ‘Elizabeth, the nation felt that Cromwell Was that man.
