YACHT ON ROCKS

TAURANGA MISHAP RESCUE BY MOTOR-VESSEL A party of five on board the keel yacht lyiatua,., owned.; by Messrs. . G. Maltby ancj P. Simmonds, had a very trying experience on Sunday at Karewha Island, near Mount Maunganui. The weather was very squally and the vessel was blown on to rocks through the anchors digging. The party Mr. F. Simmonds, Misses E. Whiting and M Burke, and Messrs. D. Maguiness and B, K. Gifford.. They sailed to Karewha to fish. As the weather was favorable they decided to Janet on tho island. However, a ,swell-from tho north prevented landing on the northern side and the yacht was sailed round to the southern side, where two anchors were dropped. A sudden squall from the south struck the yacht and bofore the anchors could be weighed the yacht was blown toward the rocks, dragging the anchors. Mr. Simmonds endeavored to sail up into the wind, but was .unable- to. do so. The Matua was driven bow first on the rocks. GEAR TAKEN ASHORE Mr.. Simmonds lowed in thg dinghy round the island iii a choppy sea to summon Mr. S. Andros, who was fishing in the locality from his launch. When the launch. reached the scene a* heavy line was taikbrf bn board it, hut unfortunately the launch was unable to pull the Matua off and as Mr. Andros’ boat was in danger of striking a reef the line had to be cast off. Mr. Andros then headed for Tauranga to summon help. In the meantime the yacht, which was Jjhjipmg heavily, had turned completely iqpiid and the counter was bumping on the-rocks, close to the shore. The party landed and gear was taken ashore. It was then remembered that the motor vessel Tuhoe was duo to pass the island en route to Tauranga, so two members of the party went to the top of the island, where they , were able to signal the Tuhoe as she came past. ' By this time the tide had risen and Mr. Simmonds boarded the yacht and was able to take up sufficiently on the anchoi line to bring the yacht' into deeper water, though still among the rocks * NO EXTENSIVE DAMAGE On arrival at the island the Tnlioe hove to on the. northern side and took •four of the party, including the two ladies, on board. ' The Tuhoe then went to the southern side, where Captain Ryder dropped anchor some distance from the shore. A long line was attached to the Matua and with the aid of the Tuhoe’s winch the yacht was gradually drawn off tho rocks. Tho Tuhoe was just under way with the yacht in tow when Mr, A. Dickson, who had been notified of the mishap bv Mr. Andros, arrived in the harbor board launch, but ,his assistauce was not required. The Matua was leaking badly at tiiis stage, for a heavy blow just before the yacht came off the rocks pushed the nadder up into the hull. However, Mr. Simmonds was able to keep the water under control and the Matua reached port safely.. The yacht is not extensively damaged.
