LICENSING POLLS

3-YEAR PERIOD SOUGHT MOVE TOR RETENTION An endeavor to secure the retention of triennial licensing polls is being made and a canvass of members of Parliament is being conducted to ascertain the measure of support likely to be given such a proposal. . The Electoral Amendment Bill, which seeks to extend the life of Parliament from three years to four, will involve widening the period between licensing polls, wnich are customarily taken on the day of the general election. The movement now on foot contemplates tho insertion of an amendment in the bill to provide that licensing polls should continue to be held at three-yearly intervals. There appears to be small prospect of the movement making much headway, as considerable extra expense would he involved in taking polls which would coincide with the general elections oniy once in 12 yeals. It will be remembered that an arrangement was made whereby r.o referendum on the liquor question was taken at the time of the general election last year, and the next poll was postponed until the date of the next election, whicli will not normally take place until 1935.
