A BEAUTY SPOT
(To the Editor of the Herald.)
.Sir,—Twenty-one years ago I enjoyed the privilege of, and derived much pleasure from living for two years in your fair town. On every possible occasion we used to go by road so leisurely over the hills to wliat we then termed llolden’s bush, but which, 1 believe, is now termed Longbush. To an ardent lover of nature the scene of river, verdant bibs, and the shelter and wonderful flora of the. forest, all responding as it were Lo the glorious sunshine and blue skies of this wonderful climate, never failed to satisfy that love and craving for beauty, peace and contentment, which either slumbers or sings in every human heart. Now, in returning for a short visit, I learn that this idyllic retreat. has been offered to Gisborne city at a very reasonable price and been rejected. Surely there are enough lovers of poetry in Gisborne to rigidly estimate the tremendous spiritual value to the human mind of such a place, and publicspirited enough to form themselves into a committee to save this inestimable asset from destruction. Was there ever a time, as now, in the history of the world when men should recognise that real living is not to be found solely in the pursuit of. pounds, shillings, and pence, but in the recognition ami appreciation of rbe beautiful, the good, and the line, and until this ideal is attained should we not retain the symbols of these qualities as expressed, for instance, at Lonpbush?—Yours, ec.. “THE PRODIGAL.”
