ENGINEER’S REPORT

A brief report was submitted by tin 1 engineer. Mr. C. F. Marshall Smith, a? under:—.

“Grab dredge.—The grab dredger has been engaged for the greater part of the period dredging in the channel and for a few days at No. 1 berth, Haiti basin In addition, tho plant has been utilised as a floating crane dumping concrete blocks over the breakwater. . “Langhuids extension, breakwater.— As mentioned above, additional blocks and rubble have been dumped over the breakwater to serve as protection for Lire weakened portion of the capping. ’lt. is not intended to do anything more at present, though tho position will need to lie carefully watched in case further weakness develops. “Haiti wharf repairs.—Repairs to the, timber wharves have proceeded steadily and the stock of decking has now been used up. In order to carry but necessary repairs during the coming season an additional quantity of timber for decking will ave to he obtained. I estimate that 3CO pieces of 9in. x 4in. x 17ft. blackbutt will he necessary. Based on the price of the previous shipment, the cost would be £32l—that is, at the late of 42s per 100 super feet, “Waterside workers’ building.—The painting of the roof has been completed and all- minor details fixed up, and the final contract payment is now approved.

“Heavy crane.—The 20-ton crane was utilised on two days during the month in shipping the insulated meat wagons which tire now no longer required for the Taruhern works. In all, 20 iifis were made, ranging in weight from 8 tons to 13i tons, and the work was done with ease, and promptness. During the month the board’s cranes at Tuarnotu Island and at Nulrnka were inspected. The crane at Tuarnotu Island, winch has been exposed to the action of tire wind and sea since the, conclusion of the sea wall job, is now in need of a complete overhaul to prevent deterioration of vital parts. In addition, the jetty am which the crane is situated is becoming unsafe, and undue delay might lead to t lie total loss of the crane. I would therefore advise that, (he crane lie dis inatitled and brought back to tlie yard and given proper attention. “T 1 io 20-lon crane formerly hired to .Mr. Peacoeke and now stored in the railway yard at Nnhaka is in very good order, but should now be given a coat ol oxide paint to prevent deterioration. In view of the altered circumstances re carding railway access, I would advise that, this era no also should be brought back lo (tisborne, where it can receive periodical attention. ’’ The works committee was authorised to deal with the engineer’s recommendations regarding the returning of the heavyweight cranes from Waikokoim and from Tuarnotu Island. A short discussion took place on the best means of having the crane at Wnikokopu 1 rouglit back to Gisborne, the engineer ■dating that the size and weight of the separate members of the crane precluded their being handled by road trails port. The report was adooled. The secretary, Mr. If. A. Barton, laid the balance sheet of the hoard, for the year coded September 30 last, on the (aide for the oernsnl of members prior to submission to the Audit Department.
