PARATA GENEALOGY
DISTINGUISHED MAORI LINEAGE
In connection with the death of Mr. Him Parata, of Waikanae, it is interesting to recall that his late father, Mr. Wti'omu Parata, was born oil Kapiti Island in 1834. He was on his father’s side descended from the powerful Ngatitoa and Ngatiawa tribes, while on his mother’s side he claimed to be descended from an Englishman named St. Stubbs, wlio arrived at Kapiti in the early ’thirties. Certainly the lineaments of the late Mr. Wiretnu Parata, who was a member of the House of Representatives for nine years, were infinitely more English than they were Maori. ' His handsome looks were transmitted to the late Mr. Him Parata and his sister, Mrs. Webber, at present resident of Kapiti. Hira’s mother was a daughter of the chief Pukehi, of the Ngiati-Raukawa tribe. 1-lira’s father was Native Minister during ilio governorships of Sir George Bowen, Sir James Ferguson, and the Marquess of Normanby, He owned 6CCO acres of rich land at Waikanae, and the northern third of Kapiti Island.
