The Prime Minister, in referring to the scheme lor alleviating unemployment-, more than once mentioned the promotion of the coal hydrogenation process for the extraction of petrol and other oils as a means of stimulating the mining industry. Settlement and allotment schemes, and the encouragement of home crafts in rural areas as u means of providing useful occupations and maintaining morals, were also among his proposals. Lord Hailsham stated that 50,000 unemployed now possessed garden allotments. The Government hoped during the coming year that 30.000 additional allotments would be provided.
