HASTINGS STOCK SALE , Cattle- values in Hawke’s Bay continue to fall, and there was a iurtber slight weakness at the Hastings stock sale on Wednesday. However, some of the sheep were in better demand, and a- marked rise in value*, for fat shorn ewes was noticed, mainly duo to a small yarding, with fat lambs unchanged. There was also a better demand for store sheep, of which there was also a small yarding. Quotations were as follow:

Cattle.—Prime ox, £4 14s to £5 6s; light and medium, £4 5s to £4 12s; prime heavy heifers, £3 14s to £4 4s; Hgiit heifers, £3 to £3 12s jvprime heavy cows, £2 15s to £3 4s; medium anti light cows, £2. 6s to £2 14s. Fat sheep.—Fat ewes, 7s to 8s 9d; fat wethers, 9s 6d to 10s 9d; fat lambs; 10s 6d to 11s Bd. Store sheep.—Two-tooth wethers, small, 7s 10d; 2-th ewes, small, 9s- sd. THE BUTTER MARKET New Zealand butter prices continue on the downward grade with a further decrease of Is per cwt. since yesterday’s advice and 28s.below the rate ruling two months ago. Those interested in the dairy market hoped that the decline had stopped weeks ago, but it lias proceeded to a phenomenally low level. Some hope for the future has been noted in that f.o.b. buyers have begun to operate after a spell of inactivity, and offers of 9d per lb. for DecernberJanuajy shipment, have been made. This is viewed as an encouraging sign in some quarters, but London opinion is. that cheap forward offers was partly responsible for precipitating* the present weak position. However, 9d per lb. is slightly above what the butter is worth at the present market values of 85s to 85s, which, including exchange, equals just a little above 8.55 d per lb., f.p.b. Joseph Nathan and Company report as follows to-day: “Butter; finest 86s, first grade 85s. Cheese, white 61s to 625, colored 59s to 60s. Spot supplies are scarce.’’
