AUSTRALIANS WARNED

CONDITIONS IN RUSSIA MARRIED COUPLE’S EXPERIENCE CANBERRA, Nov. 16. A warning to Australians who may be thinking of settling in Russia was issued to-day by the Minister for the .Interior, Air. Perkins. lie said that cases come under the notice of his department which show that great ignorance prevails as to tlie living conditions and prospects of employment in Russia. “A typical case of ibis kind lias just been brought to my notice,” said Mr. Perkins. “An Australian resident and bis wife sold up their home and went to Russia, expecting to obtain employment. It is usual for the Commonwealth authorities to issue a friendly warning when the application is made for passport facilities, but in this case the intention to go to Russia was concealed. The venture cost the couple all their savings, and they became destitute. After the husband bad recovered from a severe illness, duo to underfeeding and worry, the couple managed by selling some articles of their clothing to raise their fare to London. There is reason to believe that several other families are selling up their hoines in Australia witli the idea of embarking on a similar venture. If such is the case, they would he well advised to take a warning in time.”
