GOLD DISCOVERY

THE CROMWELL AREA PROMISING FIND MADE Cromwell is excited over reports of a somewhat sensational gold discovery in the district (as reported in Saturday’s issue.) The locality of the find is on the north bank of the Kavvarau River, on the Ranfurly claim. Two young miners have driven 200 ft, through a sandstone bottom and when they first struck an alluvial deposit in the back good prospects were found. During the last tew weeks the prospects have improved considerably, as the tunnel lias been extended and a great lead from the Kawarau through the Cromwell fiat seems to have been opened up. Reports of an ounce or more to the dish, and weekly returns for two men of £ICO and more, were current, and now can be more than substantiated. The young -men do not make any secret of the success of their labors, and they richly deserve it. A lend with ;i good body of rich wash has already been proved over some distance. and the tunnel is still being driven across it. Some of the richest patches can, in mining terms, aptly be called a “jeweller’s shop.” The richest ground so far worked was during the week before last, and that the week's work will produce considerably over £IOO worth of the precious metal can be accented as a modest estimate. The gold is of an even sample. The lead is situated well above the river level, and it presents no working difficulties, It is a case of hard work and enterprise rewarded. 'Hie young miners were "new chums," but enterprising, and their success has been gained entirely without Government control or advice. All they received was a weekly allowance of 14s 3d, and for weeks this did not suffice for explosives. Others are now feverishly settling in on adjoining areas which they hold, and other areas have been pegged off. Another narty of two in an adjoining tunnel has also tapped the same lead further east and is washing as high as 3dwt. to ilie dish.
