WOMEN'S INSTITUTE (Herald Correspondent.) Last Friday afternoon Mrs. E. Kelly, president of the Tolaga Bay Women’s Institute, presided over a large and enthusiastic gatering of members and friends. Despite the inclement weather, there was almost a full gathering, who spent a delightful time. Miss BarnsGraham, a visitor to the Coast, gave an interesting discourse on Scottish institutes, of one of which she is a member, and gave a number of acceptable tips whereby tho local body might be improved. She also read her institute’s programme, and agreed that on her return to Scotland sho would arrange for a link institute for tho Tolaga Bay blanch. Mrs. Williams, president of the Poverty Bay federation, gave an account of her experiences at tho recent New Zealand conference. Mrs. Williams mentioned that tiie delegates represented 13 federations, -'72 institutes and 20,000 members, showing the great growth of the movement since the war. Mrs. McChskie, federation secretary, gave a lucid address on the duties of secretaries, her remarks being keenly followed. Mrs. Meredith rendered a delightful Irish monologue. Mrs. V. Smith, another federation' member, spoke briefly on duties and privileges. Mrs. W. LissantCJuyton, Gisborne, the lecturer, chose for her subject perfumes and their home manufacture. Afterwards Mrs. Clayton showed a number of articles dyed from plants, .tnions, parsnips, blackberry, orange skins, and lichens, all providing astonishing range of colors.
Mrs. J. L. Reeves and Miss BarnsGraham judged the competition work, as follows:—Fancy work: Mrs. Reid, pair of pillow shams, 1; Mrs. Holder, tea cloth, 2; Mrs. Crai.ll, infant’s dress, 3. Wool work: Mrs 'Sloane, pullover, 1; Mrs. Jolly, jumper, 2; Mrs. Fred Lawrence, cushion, 3. Bouquet: Miss Kemp, bouquet, 1; Mrs. Jolly, 2; Mrs. Cranswick, 3. Embroidered aprons: Mrs. Craill, 1; Miss A. L. Moore, 2; Mrs. Jolly, 3. Cookery: Miss Bartram, 1; Mrs. Taylor, 2; Miss A. L. Moore, 3. Dainty basket, Mrs. Holder.
At the conclusion of the meeting a very hearty vote of thanks was extended to the lecturers for a particularly interesting afternoon. Among., those present were Mesdames Kelly, Taylor, Williams, McCliskie, Smith, Meredith, W. Lissant Clayton, Lawrence (2), Norris, Ryall, J. L. Reeves, MacDonald, G. Wilson, Fraser, Waterbary, McCreedy, Pickett, Tempest, G. W. King, Sloane, Moore (2), O’Connell, Mullooly, Reid, Burgess, McNeill, Jones, Craill, Jolly, Walker, Shaw, Cranswick. T/onald, Powell, Bartram, Milne, Holder (2), and Hurlstone; Misses Bartram, Bams-Graham (2), McNeill (2), Goddard. Moore, M. Reeves, Roberts, Baumann, Callaghan, Boreham, Doherty, Kemp, Kelly, Fraser, and Higgs. This morning, Mrs. J. R. Murphy, who v as admitted recently to the Cook Hospital,. Gisborne, was reported to be progressing quite favorably.
