GOVERNMENT OFFICERS ANNUAL CENTRE MEETING The annual meeting of the, Hawke’s Bay centre of the New Zealand .Sanitary Inspectors’ Institute was held in Gisborne on Saturday afternoon, the centre president, Dr. 11. B. Turbott, medical oiliccr of health at Gisborne, presiding over members from all parts of tho district, A visit was paid to a dairy supplying milk to Gisborne and also to an ice cream factory, while yesterday the members visited various points of interest in and around Gisborne. At the annual meeting, the election of officers resulted: President, l)r. 11. B. Turbott, re-elected; vice-president, Mr. Milne (Wairoa) ; committee, Messrs. F. N. Holder (Gisborne), 1). Evans and A. Walkinson (Napier), and S. Welsh (Dannnvirkc) ; secretary, Mr. E. Grant (Napier); delegate to New Zealand institute, Mr. S'. Welsh; auditors, Messrs. Walkinson and Evans (Napier). It was decided to hold the next meeting in Darmevirko.

Three papers dealing with subject? of importance to sanitary inspectors were read.

Mr. T. 1!. Gardiner, of Wellington, dealt with the ventilation of public halls and theatres, remarking that present conditions were much in advance of what prevailed in the past, but that further improvements might lie effected. Dr. I mbott spoke of the bacteriological control of milk and ice cream in the East Cape heallh district, and illustrated this by means of graphs kept in regard to individual suppliers. It was the opinion of the meeting that what was being done in this district was proving most satisfactory.

The disposal of dairy waste was treated in a paper read hv Mr. Welsh, who commented on the 'increasing difficulty of the problem in view of the fact that fewer dairymen welro keeping pigs to consume their skim milk, owing to tho present small profit, in these animals. He outlined a scheme of irrigation over Hie ground from tanks. A discussion followed flic reading of each paper, and also in connection with general health work.
