RUGBY ON THE COAST

PLAY IN WAIPIRO BAY TAWIIITI BEAT WAIMA (Herald Correspondent.) Las'. Saturday in Wai'piro Bay, Wuima received (heir first set hack this season, going down to Just year’s winners, Tawhiti, to the tune of C> to nil. The ground was very wet, resulting m forward work mainly. Occasionally the backs made, a passing rush, which in variably broke down. The policy of Tawhiti in keeping the ball at the forwards’ toes and not endeavoring to pass and the backs keeping dose up to the Wuima backs, who persistently tried to open the play, was fatal to Wuima. Tawhiti forwards worked like Trojans and dominated the play for fully three-quarters of the time. Wainia’s front rankers were most, successful at hooking the ball, getting il four times out of five scrums, but the conditions were against their backs utilising thin advantage. The most -sensational piece of 'play in the first half was when Arno!,! Williams (here on holiday from Christ’s College) received the ball from a high kick in his stride and -sot sail for the line; he outstripped his vis-a-vis and was within an acc of scoring when the fullback, coining across fast, pushed him out of bounds, but not before the winger reversed passed. An over-eager forward following up failed to ground the ball and was penalised for hanging on. After half-time the two packs got down to further business, made the pace faster, and a good exhibition of Hi fit forwards was witnessed. About 15 minutes off time the ball was hooked from the ruck to Api Pipi, to Kaliu Northover, to J. Smith, who, running straight, evaded his man and raced for the line with Williams in support, lie chose to dive head first into about ■{in. of water, dragging the fullback with him. It was a pretty swerving run which originated by running straight, and when lie was so near the goal line ho was quite correct in going on, us a greasy ball is easily dropped. Wainia, with a concerted and iletermed forward rush, came near to scoring as they had been. This rusn took their opponents and spectators by surprise, for it was a series of at • lacks which was making the pare and something had to go after it finished. Although Wainia did not bring it to a successful termination they were not unlucky, for the tackling by the defenders was “no man standing,’’ever, man doing his share, both attacker anu defender. A penalty kick to Maims : n a handy position was the result but il good attempt just missed. In Wainia’s twenty-five the ball wn. ; again hooked from a loose -scrum when the half-hack passed to Api J’ipi, who cut in, leaving only the fullback to oppose him, but Pipi, instead of riming directly to his man, changed his direction, which nonplussed the fullback, who could not prevent him from touching down. —ti—0. In the final five minutes of the game, Wainia had the better of things, but tackling was just good enough to prevent them from opening their account. Mr A. Swan capably controlled the game which, under the conditions, was well played by botli teams. The most outstanding player was J. Mellroy, at half. He is a young junior, and lin first senior game was outstanding, particularly the way in which he handled the ball from off the opposing forwards toes. PLAY AT TOKOMARU BAY UNITED BEAT TAWHITI JUNIORS (Herald Correspondent.) Tawhiti and United juniors met at Tokumaru Bay on 'Saturday, the lattei team winning hy 19 to 11. From a dribbling rush started by the United forwards, H. I’otea, for United, secured and scored in the corner. -The kick failed. M. Morrell, for Tawhiti. secured from out of the rough and got over the line in a handy position. PWhariliinga converted. L. Halo next scored for United after a fine passing movement, the kick failing. United were put further ahead by B. Kemp, who crossed after a brilliant run. The ...kick failed. Tawhiti were awarded a free kick in a handy position. P. W. Whariliinga scoring. Iv. llalo again scored forUnitrd, securing the ball from a dribbling rush and getting over under the posts. The kick failed. Soon after H. Potoa was successful with a running drop-kick. The Tawhiti score was increased when M. Morrell dived over the line in a good position • the kick failed. Both sides then forced the pace, the game, being fairly even until S.
