MEETING BRITISH TAXES LORD lIAREWOOD’S SACRIFICES (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Tress Assn.) LONDON, Oct. 26. The News-Chronicle says that owing tr the new taxation Lord Ilarewood is selling his London residence, Chesterheld House, and letting Goldsborough (fall, in Yorkshire, and is also reducing his Newmarket racing establishment. Lord Ilarewood is reputedly one of the wealthiest men in England, but is hard hit by taxes. He and Princess Mary are anxious to make economies without dismissing any employees. Chesterfield House is London’s finest house. Lord Ilarewood bought it at great cost, and redecorated it before Ins marriage to Princess Mary. It contains his magnificent collection of old masters. It. is recalled that- Lord Harewood recently sacrificed the Canning Jewel, which, according to tradition was a gift by a prince of the House of Medici to one of the Mogul Emperors. It was found in tho treasury of tho King of Oudh, when Delhi was taken during llio Indian mutiny, and came into tho possession of Lord Canning, tho first Viceroy, and later passed to Lord Ilarewood. It is also announced that taxation is compelling Lord Durham to closo Lambton Castle, probably selling the ancestral paintings, including Laurence’s “Red Roy” for which he refused an American offer of £BO,OOO last year. Lord Sack vi lie is selling two Reynolds portraits from his famous collection at Knolc Park.
Lord Tankerville stated recently that be was closing Chillingham Castle, Northumberland, owing to'the demands of taxation. Tho Dowager Lady Tankervillo will reside in Edinburgh. Lord Tankerville said he did not know yet whether the famous herd of white wild cattle would be retained. The cost was very heavy. There wore 44 animals, and white cattle had been on the estate for nearly 7CO years.
