AMATEUR ATHLETICS
CANTERBURY’S VISIT TEAM FOR H.8.-P.B. TOUR Particulars have been received by Mr. E. Algie, hon. secretary of the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harriers Club, of the team selected provisionally by the Canterbury University Club for a visit to Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay in January, and the capabilities of tbe team as outlined by the secretary of the Canterbury club suggest that the appearance of tbe southern athletes in Gisborne will be one of the outstanding events of several seasons. The Canterbury team will visit Napier for a combined sub-centre meeting there early in January, and will come on to Gisborne for * meeting fixed tentatively fon January 14. The Napier-Hastings urea of the sub-centre district also will send a team to Gisborne on January 29, but the Canterbury team’s visit will probably be more interesting, as the ’varsity club includes a number of champions, several of whom are to make the trip north. A review of the team has been forwarded to Mr. Algie as under: — R. M. Barrer, New Zealand University distance champion. His best performance for three miles is 15min. lOscc., and be has done one mile in 4.32. A. T. Anderson has done a quartermile in 52sec, and can do tbe 220yds in 23 2-ssec. or better. F. R. Askin, hurdler and New Zealand high jump champion, has covered the 120vds 'hurdles in 16 2-ssec, and has jumped sft. 9m., but is now attempting the American “roll.” N. Mnlvey, pole vault exponent, has dona 10ft. G. McGregor, hurdles, discus and hammer exponent, is a good all-rounder. He represented Canterbury at the last championships in Wanganui. D. M. Bain, manager of the team, is a good quarter-miler, half-miler, and quarter-mile hurdler. _He represented New Zealand universities in Australia recently.
It is’ hoped that Harley, the champion middle-distance man, will be able to join the team, and in that case the side should he something out of the ordinary. Denys Anderson, a consistent and promising runner over the half and quartermile, will understudy for Harley if tho latter is unavailable; and there is a good prospect of George Hart being among the visitors, as one of the sprinters.
