U.S. UNEMPLOYED
CALL FOR £400,000,000 NEW YORK, Sept. 9. Labor Day was observed in the United States by meetings everywhere parades of unemployed, and in some big districts by meetings of Communists. Three speakers who are nationally known —Mr. William Doak, Secretary of Labor, Senator Wagner, and Mr. William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, were agreed that the country is facing its greatest emergency. Acording to Mr. Wagner, who for the last two years has devoted himself to tin- study of the industrial situation, there arc 7,000,000 unemployed. He suggested that the Government should appropriate at once £400,000,000 for the construction of piiblic works, which he estimated would employ about 1,000,000 men and incidentally benefit 1,000 000 more engaged in agriculture and other .occupations. Air. Doak defended the Government against the frequent charge of indifference and failure to appreciate the situation, which was admittedly fraught with tragedy. The Federal Government, he said, was irresistibly opposed to, the dole, but would work to the utmost, with the State and local authorities to relieve distress.
