BIG WAITING LIST

AUCKLAND HARBOR BRIDGE APPLICANTS FOR JOBS “Hundreds of men have been applying for jobs already,” said Mr. C. H. W. Wills, chairman of directors of the Auckland Harbor Bridge Co., on Saturday. “A list is being kept of the qualifications of applicants with a view to the necessary number of skilled and unskilled men being employed, but the time for putting men on is still some considerable time off.

“With the exception of skilled overseers, who will be brought out by whatever company obtains the contract for tlie building of the bridge, practically the whole of tho labor employed will be New Zealand, with preference to Aucklanders. A written undertaking to this effect has already been given by thq bridge company to Mr. A. J. Stallworthy, M.P., who was in charge of the hill, and a similar undertaking has been given to the three local authorities mainly concerned.

“The local bodies have to approve the contract, and will take care that the employment of New Zealand labor as fains possible is one of the conditions included. We hope that a start will be made on the work before next winter. Mr. L. Ennis, of the Dorman Long Co., builders of the Sydney bridge, who was in Auckland some time ago, made a statement while, here that if his company were successful in obtaining the contract they would employ as much local labor as possible. He had a good look round when in New Zealand and ascertained that there were plenty of men available for the work.”
